Robert J. Williams, Sr.


Robert J. Williams, Sr., 87, of Springfield died Monday, October 20, 2008 in the Ohio Masonic Home following a lengthy illness.

He was born April 6, 1921 in Covington, Ohio the son of Edgar and Iva Williams. Mr. Williams served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, at one time was a driver for General Eisenhower. After the war he served 23 years in the Air Force Reserve and was called to Active Duty twice, retiring as a Master Sergeant.

Robert was retired from Ohio Edison where he was a supervisor in the Tree Trimming Division. He also enjoyed camping and woodworking.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law Robert J., Jr. and Rita K. Williams; one daughter and son-in-law Rebecca D. and Donald J. Perkins, all of Springfield; three grandchildren Donald J. (Missy) Perkins, Jr., Justin (Amy) Williams and Melinda (Paul) Bechtel; six great grandchildren Alese and Noah Williams, Hunter Blessing, Joseph Perkins, Brooke and Brayden Bechtel; three brothers Edgar Williams, Jr. of North Carolina, Tom Williams of California and Thomas Draving of Covington, Ohio; eight sisters Betty Rogers of Springfield, Hazel Wiles of Sidney, Martha Bell and Estella Kissler of Troy, Alice Jo Dryer of Casstown, Pat Conley of St. Paris, Joan Supinger of Covington and Rosalee; two sisters-in-law Patricia Rafferty of Springfield and Naomi Ledwidge of Edmore, Michigan; many nieces and nephews;

He was preceded in death by his father Edgar; mother Iva Draving; stepmother Naomi Williams; his wife Florence "Phoebe" Williams in 1999; sisters Estella Koons, Mary Marie Williams and Caroline Draving; brothers Carl Edward Williams, John, Cron and Richard Draving.

Friends may call Wednesday from 5-8 PM. in the RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 AM. in the Memorial Home with Pastor Wendell Hakala officiating. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
