Martha L. Winkhart


Martha L. Winkhart, 90, of Springfield, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, January 1, 2008 in her residence at Eaglewood Village Apartments.

She was born in Osborn, Ohio (now Fairborn) on October 22, 1917 the daughter of the late E.V. and Louise (Schickner) Peiffer.

Martha graduated Magna Cum Laude from Wittenberg University in 1955 with her Bachelor's degree in elementary education and taught at Warder Park Elementary School. After earning her Masters degree in Counseling from Wittenberg, she became a counselor at Clark Middle School and taught evening classes at Wittenberg.

She retired in 1989 after a career of nearly 45 years. During her retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, spending winters in Arizona and volunteering at the Mammography Center. While at Eaglewood Village she enjoyed performing comedy on entertainment nights. Martha was a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

She will be sadly missed by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Richard Booher of Springfield and Cheryl and Frank Holdraker of Scottsdale, Arizona; two grandchildren, Jon Sterling Jr. (Johanna Miller) of Springfield and Jennifer Sterling-Barker and her husband, Jay of Scottsdale, Arizona; and a special friend, Jane Aleshire of Springfield.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Burtice Winkhart in 1991.

Martha's funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Roger A. Herrig officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.
