Kathleen Whitacre

Kathleen Whitacre, 70, of Springfield, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on February 2nd following recent health complications. Katie had been living in Cincinnati for the past year with her children and grandchildren.

Katie was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, the daughter of Robert and Carolyn Muldoon. Her family moved often during her childhood as a result of her father's position with International Harvester, Inc. Katie's family moved to Springfield, Ohio in 1954 and she graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1956. It was there that she met Joseph "Joe" Whitacre, her future husband. Katie graduated from Cincinnati's Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in 1959, and spent her nursing career in various positions at Community Hospital in Springfield, Ohio.

In addition to her husband of 48 years, Joe Whitacre, Katie is survived by her children, Laura (Mike) Kenney of Loveland, Ohio, Joe (Lisa) Whitacre of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren, JC and Bobby Whitacre, Rachael and Michaela Kenney; brothers, Robert (Peggy) Muldoon of St. Louis, MO and Stephen (Linda) Muldoon of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; in-laws, Mike (Sherry) Whitacre of Springfield, OH, Christine Wissinger of Ocala, FL, Steven (Carrie) Whitacre of Springfield, OH and Rene (Ralph) Talkers of Franklin, OH and numerous nieces and nephews..

Katie is preceded in death by her parents, and an infant grandson, Michael Kenney.

Katie was diagnosed with kidney disease in 1994 and experienced kidney failure in 1995. The gift of a successful kidney transplant extended and enriched her life by 14 years this month! She appreciated every day—always laughing and smiling.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, February 4th from 5:00-7:00 PM at Conroy Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bernard Catholic Church Thursday, February 5th at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Ohio State University Medical Center Transplant Program or The National Kidney Foundation
