Leslie A. VanFossen


Leslie A. "Smokey" VanFossen, 95, of Springfield passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2009 in his residence. He was born in Saltcreek Township in Pickaway County, Ohio on December 12, 1913, the son of Albert W. and Sarah K. (Congrove) VanFossen.

Smokey was a member of the Elderly United and Daughters of America Catawba Council #314. He had formerly worked for Anchor Hocking Glass and retired as a farm manager with Opekasit Farms and Baldenhofer Farms.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Leona Hedges, Mamie Bethel, Nellie Reid, and Martha Storm, brothers Rufus, George, Ralph, and Roy VanFossen, great granddaughters Kayla Cook and Leslie Milam.

Smokey has left to cherish his memory, his wife of 74 years, Alice Vivian (Collins) VanFossen, three daughters Joan (Robert) Massie of Cartersville, GA, Edna Jean (Harold) Stout of New Moorefield, and Alyce Faye (William) Dunlap of Springfield, 17 grandchildren Don Lund, Greg, Mike, and Bob Stout, Dan, Paul, and Frank Fitzgerald, Joe Massie, Kathy Milam, Alyce Fisher, Johnna Cook, Carol Sharp,Becky Jenks, Mike, Jeff, Susie, and Terri Massie, one sister Helen Sharp of Amanda, 42 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 19, 2009 from 5-8 PM in the RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME. Visitation will also be Friday from 5-8 PM at the Sheridan Funeral Home, Lancaster, Ohio, where services will be Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Todd Smeltzer officiating. Burial to follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Lancaster.
