Roger Smith Phares


Roger Smith Phares, age 81, passed peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, March 8, 2009 at the Community Hospital. He was born May 13, 1927 in Clark County to the late Herbert and Margaretha Phares.

He was a lifetime member of the United Church of South Vienna and the IOOF Vienna Lodge #345. He participated in the Emmaus Walk and completed his journey in 1998. Roger was a dairy farmer for over 40 years in South Vienna. During his dairy farming career he was associated with: The Clark County Farm Bureau, Miami Valley Milk Producers and National Holstein Association. He was also a member of the Ohio Water Quality Association. Roger was a former real estate agent and was the owner of Phares Pumps and Rentals.

He is preceded in death by his brothers; Junior, Ralph, and Norris Phares; and sister, Helen Grieser.

Roger is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Miriam (Woodruff) Phares; their children, Roger Kim (Melanie) Phares of FL., Michelle (Don) Castle of Washington Court House, Bart (Melissa) Phares of South Vienna, Melody (Tony) Sekulovski of AZ.; grandchildren, Danielle and Stephanie, Seth and Zachary, Tyler, Emily and Sarah, Alexander, Chloe and Simon; brother Chris (Kathleen) Phares of Tiffin; sister Audra Luttrell of Christiansburg; sister-in-law, Lois Phares of St. Paris; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Family to receive friends Wednesday, March 11, 2009 from 4 until 8pm at the JACKSON LYTLE WILLIAMS FUNERAL HOME 2425 N. Limestone St. Funeral service to be held 11am Thursday at the United Church of South Vienna 227 E. Main St. South Vienna, with Rev. Bill Johnson officiating. Entombment will follow in the Rose Hill Burial Park chapel.

In lieu of flowers donations may be given in Roger's memory to the church. IOOF prayer service will begin at 7:30pm Wednesday.
