Rose Jeanette Phares


Rose Jeanette (McCulla) Phares, born on January 3, 1921, in Philadelphia, PA, died peacefully on June 21, 2008 in New Carlisle, OH. She was the daughter of Charles and Harriet (Doxsee) McCulla.

She graduated from Christisansburg-Jackson School, St Paris, OH in 1939. She was a lifetime member of the United Church of South Vienna and served in many capacities; as a Sunday school and Vacation Bible School Teacher, Youth leader and taught many classes within the church. She worked tirelessly to support and build the South Vienna Church. She had worked at Mercy Hospital in the cafeteria for some time, but most of her life was spent taking care of her large family. She also served at the South Vienna-Harmony Township Fire Department on their auxiliary and was a fire dispatcher for many years. Rose was proud of her family and demonstrated what love was and how much energy it took to care for and provide thee necessary things of life, love, compassion, giving and teaching.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ralph of 56 years; sister, Thelma Grieser; step-sister, Martha McDonald; brother, Robert McCulla; brother-in-law, Ralph Heaston; sister-in-law, Marty McCulla; grand-daughter, Stephanie Sweeney; and nephews Phil and Wayne Grieser.

She is survived by her brother, Charles McCulla of Troy, OH; one sister, Eleanor Heaston of St. Paris, OH; brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Norma McCulla of St.Paris, OH; sister-in-law, Margaret McCulla of Urbana, OH; brother-in-law, Willard Grieser also of St. Paris, OH; three daughters Sue Ann Dill (Roger) and Marsha (Paul) Newman of Springfield, OH and Doxsee Phares of Antioch, CA; Five sons, James (Beth) Phares of New Carlisle, OH, Ralph (Jeanie) Phares of Xenia, OH, Mike (Tracy) Phares and Randy (Debra) Phares of South Vienna, OH and Charles (Kathy) Phares of Springfield, OH; 21 grandchildren, 22 great-grand children and 2 great-great grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Belle Manor Nursing Home for the care and friendship that Rose received while a resident there. Pallbearers are Kevin Greene, Todd Greene, Scott Greene, Andrew Phares, Ben Phares, Jay Phares, Steve Phares, Anthony Phares, Jonathan Phares, and Jacob Phares.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2008 at JACKSON LYTLE WILLIAMS FUNERAL HOME - SPRINGFIELD from 4-7 PM. Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, June 27, 2008 at 10:00 AM. Pastor Scott Griswold officiating. Entombment to follow at Rose Hill Burial Park.
