Mary E. (Stinson) Petticrew

Mary E. (Stinson) Petticrew, 95, of Springfield, died Monday morning, January 7, 2008 in Mercy St. John's Center following an extended illness.

She was born in Beavertown, Ohio on September 10, 1912 the daughter of the late William Edgar and Mary Sue (Parsell) Stinson.

Mary graduated as valedictorian from Springfield High School and graduated from Springfield Business College. At an early age, Mary was employed as a secretary and later married her employer, Stanley S. Petticrew. They owned and operated The Record Shop, Petticrew Insurance, Petticrew Supply, and The Springfield Rental Agency. In relation to the Petticrew Supply Company, they had placements of juke boxes and pinball machines in business establishments as far as Indiana, northern Ohio, and as far South as Hillsboro.

She was a member of High Street United Methodist Church as well as many community and political organizations.

Mary was an avid supporter of political candidates and was rigidly involved in their campaigns. She supported many charitable organizations including The Salvation Army, Cedarville University, Wright State University, Wittenberg University, and her greatest achievement was the Petticrew Center for Alzheimers patients at Mercy St. John's Center.

Mary worked with state and local officials and was instrumental in obtaining government funding for Alzheimers research and respite care. Her extensive research into Alzheimers Disease resulted in helping pass legislation such as the Hobson-Quilter Bill. She also established a research fund at Wright State University Medical School in her late husband's name in search for the cause and cure for Alzheimers. In addition to her support of Alzheimers research, Mary along with Dr. Dan Organziak and Representative David Hobson helped receive a government research grant for petrochemical sensitivity (Agent Orange) at Wright State University.

Mary will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Her wit and input of knowledge will linger with us forever.

She is survived by an "adopted daughter", Glenna Laughlin and her husband, Walt of Springfield; her current husband, Dr. Louis Bourekis; step-sons, Stanley S. (Dortha) Petticrew Jr. of Springfield and Richard L. (Sue) Petticrew of Chandler, Arizona; step-daughter, Alica Ann Leonard of Pensacola, Florida; nephew, Gordan E. (Margie) Gillette of Odessa, Texas; nieces, Joan Gillette Rokus of Leesburg, Virginia, Marilyn (David) Gillette Knauer of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, and Carol (Charles) Gillette Hughes of Maitland, Florida; and several cousins, great nieces and great nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her first husband, Stanley S. Petticrew; two sisters, Barbara Gillette and Margaret Stinson; and two step-daughters, Jean and Jane.

The family wishes to thank the nursing home staff at Mercy St. John's Center for their caring support.

A gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2008 from 5-8 p.m. in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home with Rev. Cary Simonton and Rev. Fr. Andrew Walsh officiating.

Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.
