Mabel R. Peel

Mabel R. Peel, 99, of Springfield, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, March 15, 2009, in Springfield Regional Medical Center, East High Campus. She was born in Upham, North Dakota on November 16, 1909, the youngest of six children of Harry M. and Alice (Fredrick) Shirk.

Mabel retired from Security National Bank after many years and previously had worked at Crowell-Collier Publishing. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She enjoyed being with family and friends, cooking (especially her homemade noodles), traveling, and the word puzzles she did until just a few months ago. She cherished the many friendships she made at Villa Park prior to moving to Clark Memorial Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bryson Peel in 1993; two daughters, Cheryl Broaddus and Betty Marshall; three brothers, Arthur, Russell and Albert Shirk; and two sisters, Esther Nicely and Ruth Farthing.

Mabel is survived by four grandchildren, Bob Jones of Springfield, and Gregory Schenck, Christopher Schenck and Terri Schenck, all of Dayton; and two great grandsons, Jaerran and Nicholas Schenck. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Robert (Janet) Shirk of Mansfield, Russell (Avanelle) Shirk of Springfield, June Kampman and Patty Sprinkle of Springfield, Wilma Smith of Dayton, and Dherlys (Robert) Shaw of Urbana; many great nieces and nephews including Marcia (Aaron) Osmon of Springfield; and great-great nieces, Terri (Tom) Paulsen of South Vienna and Christi (Paul) Frea of London, all of whom, along with Russell and Avanelle Shirk, lovingly devoted themselves to Aunt Mabel's care during her brief illness of the past two months. She is also survived by numerous great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews.

Aunt Mabel was always very appreciative of visits from family and friends, and of any kindness shown to her. She was a gentle, sweet and gracious lady and someone you wanted to be with and care for. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. We all will cherish our memories of Aunt Mabel. Our family wants to thank Clark Memorial Home for the loving care and concern shown Aunt Mabel during 2008, and more recently, Forest Glen and Hearth & Home. Thank you all for caring for our dear Aunt Mabel.

A celebration of Mabel's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Bret Layton officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Donnelsville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Clark County Board of MRDD, 2527 Kenton St., Springfield, OH 45505.
