James R. Phillips


James R. Phillips, 61, of Springfield, died unexpectedly on Monday, March 2, 2009 in his residence. He was born in Springfield on November 1, 1947, the son of Robert and Martha (Conley) Phillips.

He worked in the printing business for many years. He began his career with Springfield Gravure and later worked for Plus Mark in Greeneville, Tennessee. He most recently worked as the frame manager at Crafts 2000. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, an avid bass fisherman and was a Vietnam veteran serving in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his two daughters, Erin Phillips of Springfield and Whitney Phillips (Mike Cahill) of Las Vegas, Nevada; best buddy, grandson, Eli; step-mother, Marie Phillips; two brothers, Scott (Peggy) Phillips and Tony Phillips; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John (Agnes) Smoot; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lora (Mark) Derr; nephews, John Alan (Liz) Wing, Mark, Matt and Mike Stannard and J.P. Derr; nieces, Kira Phillips and Emily Derr; special friends, Artie (Tena) Wehenkel and Kim Mulkey.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cindy in 2008 and his step-sister, Sandra Wing.

Visitation will be held from 3-6 p.m. Friday in Grace Lutheran Church. His funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday in the church with Pastors Dan Powell and Beverly DeBord officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
