William J. Murphy


William J. Murphy, 82, affectionately known to family and friends as "Murph", passed away Saturday, June 14, 2008. He was born September 21, 1925, the son of William and Sarah "Sadie" (McManus) Murphy.

Murph was a lifelong Springfield resident, a graduate of Catholic Central High School and attended Wittenberg University. Member of St. Teresa Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a veteran, serving in the Army during World War II. A long time City of Springfield employee, he held a variety of positions during his employment, finishing his career with the city serving a lengthy term as the Assistant City Manager. He ultimately retired from the Springfield Metropolitan Housing Authority.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Connie (Halloran), sister, Rita, and infant sister, Ursula.

He is survived by four sons, Brian Murphy of Cincinnati, Michael Murphy of Springfield, Steve (Brenda) Murphy of Naperville, Illinois and Tom (Michele) Murphy of Hilliard; grandchildren, Erin Murphy, Will Murphy, Molly Murphy, Meghan Murphy and Ryan Murphy Mullins; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Patti and Cono Pitinga of Colorado Springs and dearly loved friends of the family, Lisa Parsons (mother of Erin) and Sheila Mullins (mother of Ryan), as well as several beloved nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday in Conroy Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Teresa Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name can be made to Community Mercy Hospice, 1343 N. Fountain Blvd., Springfield, Ohio 45504. The family would like to thank the staff at The Woodlands Assisted Living at Oakwood Village and all others who assisted him, especially those who provided care in his final days.
