William Russell Martin, Sr.


William Russell "Lefty" Martin, Sr., 81, formerly of Springfield died in Glendale, Arizona Wednesday, September 10, 2008. He was born February 24, 1927 in Yellow Springs, Ohio the son of Maynard and Helen (Rice) Martin.

Mr. Martin served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, worked for Steel Products and retired from Morris Bean. He was a member of Eagles #397.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law Cathy and Lou Black with whom he resided in Glendale for the past seven years; two sons William R. "Bill" Martin, Jr. and Mark Edward Martin, both of Springfield; five grandchildren Heather Martin, Richard Black, Melissa Fliegel, Scott (Nona) Martin and Kimiko Pettry; eight great grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law Robert and June Martin of Springfield; eight stepchildren Andrea (Jay) Erickson, Karen Garlock, Ernie Sanders, Kris Sanders, Jana Irwin, Michelle (Mark) Lowery, Judith Schmid, Jeff (Tonda) Sanders; eight step grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Helen Martin in 1996 and his daughter Judith Lee Pettry.

Friends may call Monday from 6-8 PM. in the RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:00 PM. in the Memorial Home with Rev. John Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
