Richard A. Mitchem, Sr.


Richard A. Mitchem, Sr., 76, of Urbana passed away Sunday, June 29, 2008 in his residence following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Springfield, Ohio on March 9, 1932, the son of John Lewis and Nell (Hiatt) Mitchem.

Richard was a member of the American Legion, Delaware and a lifetime member of the DAV. He served his country in the U S Marine Corps during the Korean War. Richard retired with 35 years of service as a welder from the D & H Manufacturing Company. Richard enjoyed fishing, camping, and going on cruises.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Nellie Lewis and Mary Ann Layne; brothers John and David Mitchem (June 26, 2008); and son Richard A. Mitchem, Jr.

Richard has left to cherish his memory, his wife of 57 years Ruth E. (Davis) Mitchem, whom he married May 1, 1951; two daughters Vickie & Jim King of Springfield and Traci & Bill Smith of Crystal Springs, MS; one sister Thelma & Paul Hyatt of Springfield; three grandchildren Amanda & Jaimie Martin, Wendy & Zoe Riley, and Richard Smith; four great-grandchildren Helena, Collin, and Casey Riley and Tyler J. Martin; brothers-in-law Richard, Bob, John (Linda), and Ray (Annette) Davis; many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank his hospice nurse Elois and their neighbors Randy Koehler and Lisa Bundy for their love and support.

Family and friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 PM in the RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME. Services will be Thursday at 10:30 AM in the memorial home. Entombment to follow in Rose Hill Mausoleum.
