Robert A. McLemore M.D.


Robert A. McLemore M.D., 88, of Springfield, Ohio died Thursday, February 14, 2008 in the Forum at Knightsbridge, Columbus, Ohio.

He was born August 6, 1919 in Johnston County, North Carolina the son of Dr. George A. and Nellie (Johnson) McLemore and moved to the town of Smithfield as a small boy.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of North Carolina in 1944, graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa. with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1944 and served his Internship there. Dr. McLemore served in the United States Navy as a Medical Officer, Lieutenant j.g. from 1944-46 with combat duty in the Pacific Theatre. He served his residency at St. Luke's Hospital, Bethlehem, Pa., from 1947-50 and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Master's of Medical Science degree in Surgery in 1950. He became a Diplomat (1951) and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (1952).

Robert married Marjorie Lee Harcourt, August 12, 1944 and moved to Springfield, Ohio in 1950 to begin his 35 year practice in General Surgery, with full surgical privileges at Mercy Medical Center and Community Hospital , Springfield, Champaign County Hospital and Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana, Ohio. In 1963 he formed a partnership with William P. Montanus, M.D. to create Surgical Associates of Springfield. He retired from surgical practice in 1985. He was a member and Deacon of Covenant Presbyterian Church, and was a member of Springfield Country Club, University Club and GODA Club. Among his many associations, Dr. McLemore was a member of County, State and American Medical and Surgical Asociations; served as Chief of Staff and Director of Department of Surgery at Mercy Hospital; served as President of Clark County Education Foundation and Tri-County Council of Continuing Education; served as Vice-president of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce; served on the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood, Ridgewood School, First National Bank (National City), Springfield Credit Bureau, Mercy Medical Center, Friends of Mercy, Friends of Oakwood Village and Mercy Foundation; had Faculty appointments at The Ohio State University and Wright State University Medical Colleges;

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law Stephen Harcourt and Karen McLemore, William Estes and Julia McLemore, all of Columbus, Ohio; one daughter Nancy Lee McLemore of Wilmington, North Carolina; one sister Eloise Grady of Smithfield, North Carolina; three grandchildren Anne Harcourt Heath of Raleigh, North Carolina, Kelly (McLemore) and Kenneth Fields II of Cincinnati, Ohio and Scott Robert McLemore of Columbus, Ohio; numerous niece and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie on July 14, 2006; two sisters Margaret Lee and Lucile Austin; one brother George A. McLemore.

Dr. McLemore donated his body to The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family with inurnment in Ferncliff Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME. Memorial contributions may be made to The Community Mercy Foundation.
