Joseph C. Kunkel, Sr.


Joseph C. Kunkel, Sr., 88, of Springfield, died at 4:33 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, 2008 in Heartland of Springfield.

Joseph was born on June 24, 1919 in Springfield, the son of Godfrey H. and Freida (Heigel) Kunkel.

He was a 1937 graduate of Catholic Central High School and retired from Robbins and Myers in 1982 after 42 years of service. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Eagles #397, V.F.W. 1031 and a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II where he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he received on February 2, 1944 near Mt. Massmonna in Italy.

Survivors include four children and spouses, Martha Ann "Marty" and Dan Tayloe, Joseph C. Kunkel, Jr., both of Springfield, Monica M. and Bill Snyder, Canal Winchester and Mary M. and Bob Binns, London; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one sister, Freida and Jack Zugelder; brothers-in-law, Ed McKenna, Francis "Bud" Kuss; sister-in-law, Lois Wertz and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Martha (Wertz) in 2006, a grandson, Mickey Snyder, sisters, Mary Margaret Dunnigan, Sr. Marie Rose (Dorothy) and a brother, Godfrey H., Jr.

Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday in the CONROY FUNERAL HOME. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday in St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Dennis Caylor officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
