Dr. James Roy King


Dr. James Roy King, age 80, died peacefully on April 12th at Sunrise on the Scioto, an assisted living facility in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. King was born on June 16, 1926 in Camden, New Jersey, the first son of Roy and Marion King. He grew up in Haddonfield, New Jersey and attended Rutgers University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. He continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving a MA and PhD in English Literature. Early in his career he taught at Anderson College, Elizabethtown College and Rutgers University - Camden. In 1960, he joined the faculty of Wittenberg University as a Professor of English and retired in 1990.

At Wittenberg, he taught a wide variety of classes ranging from Freshman English and various sections of English Literature to classes in Comparative Religion, Future Studies and Islamic Studies. During the course of his career he received three Fulbright Scholarships, giving him the opportunity to teach in Damascus, Cairo and Ankara. He was also the author of many journal articles and several academic books.

Dr. King was preceded in death by his second wife, Judith King. He is survived by his three children, their spouses and his five grandsons, all of Grandview Heights, Ohio; David King; Christopher King, Lou Tomlin-King, Noah and Peter King; Alexandra McCormick, Sean McCormick, Iain, Connor and Seamus McCormick. His brother Donald King of New Jersey and his first wife, Nancy Human of Oklahoma also survive.

His children are grateful to him for the lessons learned, opportunities provided and compassion shared. Few children are raised by a father with his level of intellect, breadth of academic experience and willingness to teach.

A memorial service will be held at Weaver Chapel on the Wittenberg University campus in Springfield on Friday, April 20th at 1:00pm.
