Charles Edo Kip

Charles Edo Kip, 91, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2008. Charles was born in Passaic, New Jersey on February 28, 1917, and had resided in Springfield since 1975 when he and his wife, Elva, opened Logos Christian Bookstore. Charles was married to Elva for nearly 50 years until her death in 1995. He was a blessing to his family who deeply admired and loved this gentle, dignified, and honorable man.

He is survived by his children, Susan and David Weaver of Springfield, Ohio, Tom and Jann Kip of Valle Crucis, North Carolina, Nancy and Jack Strnad of Broadview Heights, Ohio, and Betsy and Jim Uzzell of Evanston, Illinois and his grandchildren Mike and Kristi Weaver, Jeff and Jill Weaver, Chris and Katherine Kip, Matt and Emily Kip, Greg and Nick Strnad, Andrew and David Uzzell, and his great grandchildren Jacob, Adam, Sadie, Phoenix, and Annabelle. His Oakwood Village friends became his extended family, and he was blessed especially by his relationship and deep friendship with Wilma Bode.

Formally educated at the Loomis School, Princeton, MIT, and Case Western Reserve, Charles valued any opportunity to learn about science, literature, and political and global issues, especially those revolving around environmental conservation, poverty, and education.

He was active in the Young Men's Literary Club of Springfield and many social, musical, and leadership opportunities at Oakwood Village where he resided. Charles was a man of deep faith and commitment to his church and the Springfield community and gave generously yet quietly to many philanthropic causes throughout the world. He was admired by everyone touched by his life, and his example and his gentlemanly presence will be greatly missed.

His life will be celebrated at a service on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Raymond Stewart officiating. A private burial will take place at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, Charles wished donations be made to the Covenant Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
