Robert A. "Dutch" Calabrese


Robert A. "Dutch" Calabrese, 94, of Springfield, died at 10:34 p.m. Sunday July 29, 2007 in Mercy Medical Center.

He was born August 9, 1912 in Springfield, OH to Angelo and Rose (DiAngelis) Calabrese. Dutch retired in 1981 as the Zoning Inspector for the City of Springfield after 18 years of service. He was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and was a WW 2 U.S. Army Veteran serving as a Sergeant with the 582nd Signal Air Battalion. He participated in battles and campaigns in the European and African Theatres, receiving nine bronze stars.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marie C. (Mitchell); 5 children and spouses, Anita and Robert Geiger, Bethlehem, PA, Robert F. "Rob" Calabrese, Michael D. Calabrese, Cheryl Moore of Springfield and Diane and John Peters, Cincinnati, OH; 9 grandchildren, Robert Geiger, Anna Kratzer, Abby Ogden, Andrea McCoy, Matthew Calabrese, Nick and Jacob Moore, Jennifer and Nick Peters; 2 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian A. Geiger, 3 brothers, Felix, Alfred, Sr. (Laura Ann) and Richard Calabrese and a sister, Alvina Hessinger.

Friends may call in the Conroy Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday in St. Bernard Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Family request memorial donations can be made to St. Bernard Church.
