Hugh B. Carr


Hugh Carr passed away November 2, 2007

He was born March 26, 1913. He worked through his life as a skilled laborer. He spent considerable years as a Greyhound bus mechanic, service station maintenance. His primary trade was that of building truck bodies. Varieties went from a stake bed to haul cattle to large furniture vans. He served eight years on the maintenance staff at Cedarville College, Cedarville Ohio, and fifteen years on the maintenance staff of Southern California College, Costa Mesa, California. He and his wife also served one year in the Phillippine Islands supervising the construction of a mission hospital.

He considered himself honored to be associated with three construction sites in his life: He led the construction of his home church in Sinclairville, New York, which had burned to the ground. He also led the construction of the mission hospital in Roxas, Palawan, Phillippine Island, and he led the construction of a men's dormitory on the campus of Cedarville University which was named in his honor.

He was one of the original members of the Gerry Volunteer Fire Department, Gerry, New York, and served as the first fire chief of the department. He also had a vital part in the beginning of the Gerry Rodeo which has had an annual showing for over sixty years.

He accepted Christ as his personal Saviour as a young boy and desired to serve his Lord with his abilities in mechanics and carpentry. His primary enjoyment in life was to come along side someone in need and be able to help them either with his abilities or a monetary gift.

Hugh is survived by four children: Beverley Haskell, Jamestown, New York; Roy (Alberta) Carr, Cedarville, Ohio; Carol (David) Nims, Xenia, Ohio; and Janet (William) Scally, Rochester, New York, sixteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great grand children and six great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, E. Lynn and Marion Carr, three brothers, Vern, Raymond and Fred Carr, his wife of 53 years, June M. Carr, and an infant grandson, Mark Haskell.

Funeral services will be held at Grace Baptist Church, Friday, November 9, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. Visitation hours will be Thursday evening, November 8, 2007 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church. Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Carr's name to the Sinclairville Baptist Church, 9 Park Street, Sinclairville, New York 14782, or Association of Baptists for World Evangelism, P.O. Box 8585, Harrisburg PA 17105.

Air Force Chaplain David Carr will be officiating, and interment will be in North Cemetery.

The family is being served by the Jackson Lytle Williams Funeral Home.
